The Good:
What a great month this has been for many of the animals here at the Sanctuary. So MANY of our residents have found new and wonderful homes and we are beside ourselves with pleasure at having found just the right families for these lucky guys.
It is at times like this that Pets Alive's commitment to 'special' animals is validated and we can then overlook the anxiety we feel sometimes about giving safe haven to those who are 'different' or 'sick' or 'shy' and who take more effort to find a happy ending for. You have no idea how even our 'rainy' days become bright when we once again see the end of the rainbow for these precious critters.
Many of you do not always visit the Happy Endings page of our website but I would like to invite you to do so - the stories are heartwarming and the joy of the animals and their new guardians is obvious - hopefully the stories will make you feel good about supporting our efforts: http://www.petsalive.com/happy.htm.
Pooh got so lucky this week. He went home with Robin and Bill and the two other dogs they adopted from Pets Alive - Tasha and Sweetness. These are very special people - they adopted Tasha as a five year old who had an inherited autoimmune problem common to Akitas. This problem caused her to lose her sight and eventually her eyes. No problem - Robin and Bill have love to spare for animals with special needs. Next they adopted Sweetness (a misnomer) - a chow with'trust issues' - it took two years but now she is friendly - how many people would have given her the time? Sweetness now has stomach cancer and although she has had surgery and is undergoing chemotherapy she may not live to her expected life span of 15 years. Robin and Bill wanted to make sure that Tasha would still have a friend and so they returned to Pets Alive to find just the right c ompanion for both girls. We HOPE that Pooh realizes how fortunate he is to go to this special home and we PRAY that he proves he is up to the challenge.
Hissy, one of our geese, found some unlikely best friends while she was recovering from an illness. Sara brought two runner ducks, Dixie and Pixie, to meet her and the rest – HONK! – is history. These feathered friends are now swimming in their own secluded spa (some people call it a kiddie pool, but they have no imagination) and having a great time together.
The latest retiree from the NYC Carriage Horse trade, George, joined us very recently. For a time, he only shared his paddock with the occasional rooster who would wander by, but now he’s got a “groovy” new friend. Groovy is a beautiful and gentle mare who had once shared space with our precious Thunder. Sara hoped that these two singles would be good company for each other and it seems to be working out! George is one lucky guy. He not only has a home in the country but a lovely lady to share his golden years with. The Bad (but ended GREAT!):
The latest love story -- OK, that may be stretching it – belongs to Bambino and Isabella. Sort of reminds you of old Italia, but I digress. Bambino came to Pets Alive as a sad and very portly pot-bellied pig who needed some very special care to regain his mobility and ‘joie de vive’. We were despairing that Bambino would ever get enough exercise and good, normal piggie food to bring him back to health. Well, it turns out that all it took was a sprightly female to nip at his heels a bit and eye his food bowl and now Bambino is finally up and around. We know that Isabella will keep him on his diet and exercise plan and that they will be friends for many years to come.
Bambino’s story happens all too frequently. What starts as an adorable infant pig grows into an equally adorable but enormous full grown animal that requires special care to thrive. There are too many pot-bellied pigs being adopted by owners who haven’t researched the nutritional, environmental, and social needs of these highly intelligent creatures!!! Many of these adorable piglets end up going to shelters or sanctuaries as adults. Bambino and Isabella are two of the lucky ones to have come to Pets Alive. The Ugly:Pets Alive is unique in many ways, one of them being that we are the ONLY sanctuary to accept retired carriage horses from NYC and "throw-away" thoroughbreds from the racetrack. These horses come to us, and we welcome them with open arms, a warm paddock and lush pasture...but we also take them with all their "issues". You all remember Devil who came to us last year. We nursed him back to health, but he has chronic leg issues. Many of you have no idea how expensive caring for horses can be to help keep them sound and pain free. Devil has had a series of set-backs, although we are very happy to say he is not only on his way to recovery again, but so happy and lame free that he is prancing around his paddock and has to be restrained lest he injure his leg again before it is fully healed. His medication and veterinary treatment, however, has been exorbitant. We are struggling greatly to try to pay for his daily pain and wellness meds and to pay off the wonderful vet that h as been helping us with him. In addition to his issues, Jupie has decided he wants to be in the paddock NEXT to the one WE thought we'd like him in and one night decided to break down the entire side of his paddock...for the fun of it. No, he wasn't hurt, but our wooden paddock was destroyed. Anyone with horses, knows how expensive horse fencing is, and this cost us thousands of dollars to re-fence his pasture.
Please Help.
There is a new way to help Pets Alive while you are doing something you probably do 10 times every day. If you use http://www.goodsearch.com/ as your search engine and select Pets Alive (Middletown, NY) as the charity you want to help, Pets Alive gets a contribution for every search you run! The site is powered by Yahoo! - so it is quality search results. Last year, search engines generated close to $6 billion in revenue from advertisers. With GoodSearch part of this advertising revenue will now be directed to Pets Alive and the animals. We hope that not only will you use GoodSearch as your main search engine from here on out, but will also pass this message on to your friends and family. The more people who use this, the more money will go to the critters here at our Sanctuary. When you go to the page for the first time you will be asked to put in the name of the charity you are supporting and to click on VERIFY. We are listed simply as Pets Alive (Middletown, NY). Thanks for helping. According to the information we received if we have 100 supporters who search just two times a day we will receive a check for about $7300 a year. IMAGINE THAT!!!!!!!
Please.
Do you know how much we HATE to ask for money all the time. You probably don't believe that, but we do. We HATE this part of the newsletters and mass mailings, but we HAVE to. The state doesn't give us money, the county doesn't help us - they sure feel free to give us animals though - but not resources to help us. We hate asking you to help, but the truth is that without you...NONE of this would be possible. None of it. Every single animal that is saved here at Pets Alive, is thanks to you, and your donations. Thank you. Thank you for helping us, thank you for reading this and considering helping us again. Look at the pictures on our website, into the eyes of the animals there...and know that because of you...they are safe. Now, and forever.
Tax deductible Donations can be made through our PayPal account or by sending a check to Pets Alive Inc., 363 Derby Rd., Middletown, NY 10940. Many companies MATCH gifts to non-profit organizations such as ours. When making a donation, please check to see if your company will match your gift!...or you can

Love and thanks from all of us!
