The Broward County Consumer Affairs Division is warning residents to be alert to a “phishing” scam involving emails that appear to emanating from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The emails typically state that the recipient is under criminal investigation for submitting a false tax return.
Phishing” is a form of Internet fraud that attempts to steal valuable information such as credit card and Social Security numbers, user identification numbers and passwords. A fake web site, usually a replica of a trusted and legitimate web site, is created, typically a financial institution such as a bank or insurance company. An email is sent to a member/user that requests that the recipient access the fake web site and enter personal details, including security access codes.
“If the email recipient follows the instructions to open the attachment, or clicks on a link in the email, they will set into play a phishing operation that can result in giving the hacker remote access to the contents of the recipient’s computer,” said Larry Kaplan, Assistant Director of Consumer Affairs.
Kaplan said that the IRS does not send out unsolicited emails or ask for detailed personal and financial information. “The IRS certainly does not ask for passwords, personal identification numbers (PIN) or similar private access information for credit cards, bank or other financial accounts,” he added.
Anyone who receives a questionable email claiming to come from the IRS, should forward it to phishing@irs.gov . A reply will be sent with appropriate instructions.
