Annual Water Matters Day Set For March 24th at Tree Tops ParkWith the imposition of water restrictions March 22, Broward County's annual Water Matters Day on Saturday March 24, is taking on even more significance. The event, to be held this year at Tree Tops Park, 2900 S.W. 100th Ave., Davie, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., will focus on water conservation, protecting water quality, landscaping with native species, and Everglades restoration.Organizers for Water Matters Day include Broward County and other governmental entities, organizations and local businesses. Although the event is free, admission to the park is $1 per person; admission for children five and under is free. Participants who visit various educational exhibits will receive FREE giveaways including native trees and plants and rain gauges. Free mulch is also provided-participants are encouraged to bring their own bags. There will be a free drawing for a $1,000 Rain Bird® irrigation system (installation not included).Throughout the day, families will hear the sounds of singer/songwriter Grant Livingston, who has performed at Water Matters Day for the past several years. Children of all ages will enjoy face-painting and craft activities. In addition, Home Depot representatives will be at the park helping children design their own planters to take home.
At 4 p.m., Starbucks Coffee Company will begin its annual Walk for Water. The event is open to volunteers who pledge to walk three miles to raise money for Water Aid, an international non-profit organization. The group helps people escape poverty and disease caused by unsafe water and sanitation. Starbucks will give one dollar per hour for every person who takes part in the walk. The coffee retailer will be giving away free samples of coffee and bottled water to all participants. For more information and to register for the walk, please visit

Lit LIVE!
Saturday, March 24, 2007 9:30 am to 2:00 pm Alvin Sherman Library and the Black Box Theater in the University Center
Twenty-five authors, including Adriana Trigiani, Jennifer Crusie, Farrah Gray, and New York Times sports columnist William Rhoden appearing with NFL great Doug Williams, will speak at Literary Feast’s Lit LIVE!, Saturday, March 24 at the Alvin Sherman Library, and the Black Box Theater in the NSU University Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Come meet the authors at the Authors’ Café at the Library, and enjoy free entertainment throughout the day. Plus: the first 1,000 NSU students to visit the NSU welcome table will receive two tickets to a Florida Panthers game.

Seating: Open seating; no tickets are required. Seating is limited and is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Shuttle Service: NSU shuttles will run from the Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale to the Alvin Sherman Library at 9:15 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., and return to the Main Library at 12:45 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Parking: If you go to Nova Ziff Building on the corner of 30th and University. You can take their free shuttle to the library. Runs frequently.
Parking is available in the garage adjacent to the library for $1.00 per hour.

Literary Feast is coordinated by Byblos, the special events committee of the Broward Public Library Foundation, and all proceeds benefit the Broward Public Library Foundation in its efforts to provide books and services not otherwise available to the Broward County Library system.

NOVEL DAY for STUDENTS - FRIDAY, MARCH 23 More than 3,500 high school students will have a chance to meet the Literary Feast 2007 authors during Novel Day for Students, sponsored by BankAtlantic. Representatives from each branch of BankAtlantic have partnered with participating Broward County teachers to help with the Novel Day for Students program this year. There is a short story contest with cash prizes for the winning entries at each school. This year, with thanks to the Sun-Sentinel, students will also be competing for a new $1,000 Sun-Sentinel Short Story Grand Prize. The winners will be announced at each school by the Novel Day author. The winners will be recognized at Lit LIVE! on March 24 at Nova Southeastern University as well as at the Broward County Literary Fair in May, where cash prizes are distributed.While 24 schools will host an author at the school, all Broward County high schools will have the opportunity to participate. Students can tune into a lecture by an author thanks to teleconference capabilities provided by the district’s television station, BECON, another Feast sponsor.
NIGHT OF LITERARY FEASTS - FRIDAY, MARCH 23 - The Night of Literary Feasts begins with a gala cocktail reception at the Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale, from 6 to 8 p.m. Some 600 guests can purchase the authors’ books and have them signed while enjoying a literary-themed silent auction. Authors and guests then travel to private homes around the county for elegant dinners and stimulating conversations. Reservations are required; individual tickets are $150 per person or $300 per person for guaranteed seating at the dinner of your choice. Lit LIVE! - SATURDAY, MARCH 24 Join us for Lit LIVE! - A day where literature comes to life. Free, 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., March 24th at the Alvin Sherman Library, Research, and Information Technology Center and the new University Center on the Davie Campus of Nova Southeastern University. Free shuttles will run throughout the day from the Main Library to the NSU campus.A special luncheon is planned at Lit LIVE! with New York Times sports columnist William Rhoden, whose book Third and a Mile, tells the story of the NFL’s first black quarterbacks and their struggle to topple the sports world’s racial barrier. Appearing with Rhoden is former NFL quarterback Doug Williams, who is featured in the book. Tickets for the luncheon, scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Saturday on the NSU campus, are $50.
An Event Benefiting
Fine libraries everywhere exist with public funds, but it is through private gifts that they flourish. The Broward Public Library Foundation was incorporated in 1982 to provide books and materials that go beyond what is available theough tax base funding. The non-profit Foundation is the catalyst in sparking private funding and endowments to ensure that a state of excellence is achieved throughout the Broward County Library system.
