The Broward County Animal Care and Regulation Division will offer a Low-Cost License and Rabies Vaccination Clinic for dogs and cats to qualified low-income residents on Saturday, August 25, 2007 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center, 2400 Charleston Street, Hollywood.
In an effort to help residents maintain a valid animal license and an up-to-date rabies vaccine for their pets, this clinic is one of several being offered throughout Broward County until September 29, 2007.
At the clinics, qualified pet owners will receive a pet license valid for one year and a rabies vaccination for $15 (cash only).
To qualify, a pet owner must be a low-income Broward County resident who meets one of the following criteria:
•Receive public assistance, AFDC, unemployment, workers’ compensation, or food stamps.
•Receive Social Security and meet Federal low-income guidelines.
•Receive Social Security Income Disability.
•Meet Federal low-income guidelines based on income and family size.
The low-income pet owner must provide proof of eligibility such as Social Security pay stub, Food Stamp card, or AFDC stub; and proof of a current Broward County address such as a driver’s license or a utility bill.
A recent change in the Broward County ordinance allows pet owners a choice of a one-year or three-year rabies re-vaccination. If a pet has never been vaccinated against rabies, it must be vaccinated with a one-year vaccine. If a pet has previously received a rabies vaccination, owners may opt to have it vaccinated with a three-year rabies vaccine. In order to qualify for a three-year rabies vaccine, owners must show proof of the previous year’s vaccination by providing a rabies certificate supplied by a licensed veterinarian.
In addition to promoting responsible pet ownership, the clinics assist the County in its effort to control the spread of rabies among domestic animals and wildlife. As of March 2007, there have been 36 animals confirmed with rabies in Broward County since the outbreak began in July 2000.
An additional clinic is scheduled on Saturday, September 29 at Westside Park, 445 S.W. 2nd Street, Deerfield Beach, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
No appointments are necessary and customers are taken on a first-come, first-served basis. All dogs must be on leashes. All cats must be in carriers. Cardboard carriers will be available at the event.
Rabies is a serious, infectious, viral disease that attacks the nervous system of warm-blooded animals and humans. Unless animals are protected by the rabies vaccine, rabies is almost always fatal.
