[circletimes] Wiccan Widows Speak about Memorial Day Dedication

[circletimes] Wiccan Widows Speak about Memorial Day Dedication of VA-issued Pentacle Gravestones for their Veteran Husbands
Widows of Wiccan Veterans to Dedicate Gravestones with Pentacles on Memorial Day near Barneveld, Wisconsin USA
On this day of national remembrance the story of three Wiccan widows and a Pentacle etched in stone is being told all over the world. Three widows, all members of Circle Sanctuary have gathered at church headquarters this weekend, and are reflecting upon their husbands, their lives, their deaths, and equal rights for the Wiccan religion.

*"Now that I've seen Jerome's burial site up close, I'm starting to really feel the accomplishment we've made. I'm very pleased with the gravestone at the Circle Cemetery site, and I believe he is as well."Karen DePolito of Utah widow of Jerome Birnbaum, Korean War Veteran

*"Douglas was Wiccan as long as he could remember. Having a pentacle on his gravestone and being recognized for who he is means the world to both of us. His remains are now at peace in their new home at Circle Cemetery. He fought for Freedom for twenty-four years and now, finally he is Free."Sandra Wilkey of Kentucky widow of Douglas Wilkey, Korean War & Vietnam War Veteran

*"Today is a great day, not only for myself, but for other Wiccan families. This Memorial Day at last I am having closure. Our fight for religious freedom is over, and my husband, Sgt. Patrick Stewart can rest in peace. For the first time since Patrick's death, I don't feel as if he died in vain. May all our soldiers be blessed and remembered on this very special Memorial Day.Roberta Stewart of Nevada widow of Sgt. Patrick Stewart, Desert Storm Veteran & Killed in Action in Operation Enduring Freedom

Reflections on the Memorial Day Wiccan Veteran Gravestone Dedication by Rev. Selena Fox, who will be facilitating the ceremony. She is Senior Minister of Circle Sanctuary and Executive Director of Circle Cemetery, Wisconsin's first conservation cemetery.

*This Memorial Day, we gather to remember and honor the lives and service of our veterans who have died and to dedicate their newly issued VA gravestones with pentacles. We gather to support their widows in finally bringing closure to marking the sites of their husband's remains at our church cemetery. We also gather to celebrate our victory in upholding religious freedom -- and to envision, pray and work for a world with liberty and justice for all.

Salvage begins in June to remove 700,000 tires from Ft. Lauderdale waters

In Broward News - Full-scale tire salvage and recycling operations which aim to clean up approximately 700,000 tires from the seafloor and turn them into energy will begin in June 2007.
A media day to cover this exciting multi-agency project will occur on June 7, 2007, beginning at 9 a.m.
The dive salvage operations occur approximately 1 mile off of the beaches of Fort. Lauderdale, Florida. The Media Day will begin at 9 a.m. with briefings at the Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center (NSUOC), 8000 North Ocean Drive, located within John U. Lloyd Beach State Park in Dania Beach, FL. Interview opportunities will occur at NSUOC, on the water at the dive site, and at Port Everglades when the recovered tires are brought to land at the end of the day.

BACKGROUND: In the 1970s approximately 2 million tires were placed as an artificial reef in 60-70-feet of water on sandy bottom between two natural coral reefs. Intended as good fish habitat, the tires instead failed to support marine life and began to destroy nearby living coral reefs as storms forced the tires against living corals on their way toward shore. A well- intended artificial reef became a coral killing machine. An inventive approach, which aligns U.S. military divers with state tire recycling experts and marine biologists from Broward County and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is poised to tackle this massive cleanup, saving millions of dollars in cleanup costs in the process. Navy, Army, and Coast Guard divers are ready to use this project as an opportunity to practice their salvage skills. Broward County and NOAA are ensuring the few living corals in the area are protected. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is working with the private sector to transport the tires from Port Everglades, where an Army Landing Craft Utility (LCU) will unload tractor trailer loads of tires each day. Tires recovered from the seafloor will be processed into tire-derived fuel (TDF). For the summer of 2007, the TDF will be used to fuel a Georgia plant that produces recycled paper.
**Press kits, which include B-roll video of the underwater military tire salvage operation as well as contrasting video of Broward County’s bountiful natural and successful artificial reefs will be made available on DVD at the 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. briefings**
June 7, 2007, Media Day Timeline: 9:00-9:45 a.m. Nova Southeastern University (NSU) Oceanographic Center, 8000 North Ocean Drive, John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, Dania Beach, FL
• Remarks by Broward County Mayor Josephus Eggelletion, Jr., overview by key project staff and opportunities to interview military divers.
10:00 a.m. Depart NSU Oceanographic Center aboard chartered dive boat en route to project dive site
10:30 a.m. Arrive dive site
• Individuals requesting space aboard the media boat must RSVP to Kimberly Maroe, Public Information Manager, Broward County Commission, 954-357-8053 or 954-232-4510 by June 5, 2007.
• Independent vessels requesting access for media purposes must also RSVP to number above by June 5, 2007, for access to the tire field. There will be multiple military working dive teams operating at any given time.
• Independent media vessels are required to standoff at least 100 yards from military dive boats and the Army Landing Craft Utility (LCU). Failure to do so will result in a cessation of all dive operations.
12:00 p.m. (approximate time) Media boat arrives back at NSU dock.
5:00 p.m. Media opportunity at Port Everglades as the 175-foot Army Landing Craft offloads its cargo at Port Everglades. There will be interview opportunities with Landing Craft crew, military divers and tire recycling experts from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Good News For Broward County Pet Owners

BROWARD PET OWNERS OFFERED OPTIONS FOR REQUIRED RABIES VACCINE
DATE Posted: March 27, 2006
CONTACT: Tarnell Carroll, Public Education Coordinator PHONE: 954-359-1010 Recent County ordinance change gives some owners flexibility with revaccinationsPet owners throughout Broward County now have a one-year and three-year option for rabies vaccination of their dogs and cats. Broward County Animal Care and Regulation Ordinance Section 4-10 concerning the required vaccinations has been changed to allow the three-year option. Under the new law, only owners with pets who are receiving their first rabies vaccination will be required to administer a one-year vaccination. Following initial vaccination, all pet owners may select either the one-year or three-year option.“This gives pet owners a choice in how they want to care for their pets,” said Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman, who was instrumental in changing the vaccination ordinance. “Now two options are available. I encourage pet owners to discuss with their veterinarian the best option for their pet.”The three-year vaccine option became effective in Broward County in February 2006. Florida adopted the change on January 1, 2006, joining 34 other states that either require or recognize three-year rabies vaccines. Currently only 14 Florida counties recognize a three-year rabies vaccine for the full duration of immunity. Other recent amendments to the rabies law include a change in the terminology for “pet license.” County animal laws that require pet owners to register their pet(s) each year will now refer to that registration as a “license” instead of “license tag.” Owners of dogs or cats that are four months or older must purchase an adult Broward County license for each pet every year, regardless of whether that pet received a one-year or three-year rabies vaccine.

Low-Cost License and Rabies Vaccination Offered to Qualified County Residents
DATE: April 7, 2006 CONTACT: Tarnell Carroll, Marketing Manager 954-359-1010

In an effort to help residents maintain a valid license and an up-to-date rabies vaccination for their pets, the Broward County Animal Care and Regulation Division (ACaRD) will host a Low-Cost License and Rabies Vaccination Clinic for qualified low-income residents.

This clinic is one of several being offered at venues throughout the County until September 2006. In addition to promoting responsible pet ownership, ACaRD officials believe the clinics help the County in its effort to control the spread of rabies among domestic animals and wildlife. As of March of this year, there have been 35 rabies cases in Broward County since an outbreak began in July 2000.

At the clinics, qualified pet owners can expect to receive a pet license good for one year and a rabies vaccination for $15 (cash only). A recent change in the County’s ordinance now gives pet owners an option of a one-year or three-year rabies vaccination for their dogs and cats. However, under the new law, only owners with pets who are receiving their first rabies vaccination will be required to administer a one-year vaccination. Following initial vaccination, all pet owners may select either the one-year or three-year option. To receive the three-year vaccine at any of the clinics, pet owners must show proof of the previous year’s vaccination by providing a rabies certificate supplied by a licensed veterinarian.

To qualify, a pet owner must be a low-income Broward resident who meets one of the following criteria:
1. Receive public assistance, AFDC, unemployment, workers= compensation, or food stamps.
2. Receive Social Security and fall within Federal low-income guidelines.
3. Receive Social Security Disability Income.
4. Fall within federal low-income guidelines based on income and family size. The low-income pet owner must provide proof of eligibility such as a Social Security pay stub, food stamp card, or AFDC stub, and proof of a current Broward County address such as a driver=s license or utility bill.
Additional Clinics (all clinics are scheduled on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.):
- April 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Broward County Library, Margate Catharine Young Branch, 5810 Park Drive, Margate. [Passed]
- May 20 - Joseph C. Carter Park, 1450 W. Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale [Passed]
• June 10 - North Broward Park, 4400 N.E. 18th Ave., Pompano Beach
• July 29 - McTyre Park, 3501 S.W. 56th Ave., Pembroke Park
• August 26 - Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, 2400 Charleston St., Hollywood
• September 23 - Westside Park, 445 S.W. 2nd St., Deerfield Beach
Other Details• There are no appointments. Customers will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. • Cats must be in carriers. Cardboard carriers will be available at the event. • Dogs must be on leashes.
