POSTERS SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES, October 31, 2006 Reviewer: Steven Madden (Geneva, NY) - See all my reviews
How sad when a group of people who do not know how to read the directions or work a computer can post negative comments about one of the best will and trust programs out there. I bought the program after I read the review in PC WORLD comapring other Will & Trust kits and they said Suze Orman's Will and Trust Kit is not only a great value, but the easiest of the three will-preparation packages. By the way the kit allows for multi-user use so not only did I create my own documents for my wife and I but then I gave the CD to my brother and he downloaded it in his computer to create his and his wife's documents. If you need to make a change -- updating couldn't be easier -- when my son was born I simply updated the information in my will by added him as a beneficiary and printed out a new will -- now my whole family is protected. None of us experienced any printing problems and by the way I use a mac and they use PCs. Below is what PC World said about Suze's kit, (the aritcle is still on PC world website if you want to read the entire text comparing all the kits on the market): "For just $13.50, Suze Orman's Will and Trust Kit is not only a great value, but the easiest of the three will-preparation packages I tried. With the same demonstrative and instructional tone she uses on her PBS television shows, Orman provides audio voice-overs at just about every step. Sometimes they are annoyingly dumbed-down but, for the most part, they help to explain exactly what you are filling in on each page of the legal form--and why. When a more detailed legal explanation is needed, Dobrovolny, Orman's attorney, chimes in. The actual grunt work in creating a living will and health care directive for the user amounts to filling in personal data and selecting one of the choices for the different possible scenarios should you require life support. After the interview process (and the context-sensitive audio makes you feel like you've been in an actual rather than virtual interview), your document can be previewed and printed out for witness signatures. Wills, revocable trusts, and power of attorney must-have documents also are included, as are links to request personal documentation such as birth and death certificates, Social Security statements, and military records. Suze Orman's Will and Trust Kit requires an Internet connection to work properly.Time needed to create a living will: 20 minutes." By the way I live in NY state and took the will I created with Suze's kit and showed it to a friend of mine whom is a lawyer and he said it was one of the best wills he has seen from a self-help program. He was impressed that it included for NY state a WIll affidavit while not required to make the will valid in New York, he thought it was an excellent idea to sign one when executing a will. It can greatly reduce the difficulty associated with probating the Will when the time comes. And for the poster whom complained about an issue with a notary in NY state; the reason you could not get a NY notary to sign your will is that your will is NOT supposed to be notoraized just the will affidavit. Did you not read the instructions that came with kit? It is very clear what needs to be witnessed and what needs to be notarized -- it even shows you where to sign. They even tell you what to do in the audio, this is what the audio instructions in the kit say: "You're now ready to date and sign the will. Before you do so, however, you need to assemble your witnesses. Look carefully at the form you have. Some states require the witnesses to sign an affidavit in order to prevent them from having to appear in court after you die. If that is the case, you will need to take your witnesses to do the signing in front of a notary. Please note that some banks, although they do have notaries, do not allow the notaries to act as witnesses to the wills. So before you make that trip down to the bank with your witnesses all ready to sign, call ahead to and make sure the notary will, in fact, notarize the wills." Suze has does everything to protect you, give you the best documents for less than three Starbucks coffees and all you know how to do is complain. What is a matter with all of you you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Protect your identity and information.

Orman has an excellent CD for preparing for Living Wills and other Documents. To be added in a seperate entry. ME

Six Ways to Avoid Identity Theft by David Bach
Utility Links Printable View Email this Page
Tuesday, November 21, 2006 Page 1
Identity theft is a nightmare for its victims. Your personal data -- Social Security number, credit card numbers, and bank account numbers -- can be stolen by a thief posing as you who uses this information to spend thousands of dollars or more.
The damage goes way beyond money. Identity theft can have a devastating impact on your entire life, destroying your credit score and taking you months or even years to recover from the damage.
Some Surprising Data
The Wall Street Journal recently reported that an estimated 95 million Americans have been exposed to some risk of identity theft in the last two years due to breaches at companies, institutions, and government offices.
USA Today also reported that by year's end there will be 8.9 million cases of identity fraud, resulting in an average loss of $6,383 per victim. This crime is an epidemic, and has quickly become a billion-dollar crisis.
The Javelin Strategy and Research 2006 Identity Fraud Survey Report, believed to be the largest ever on identity theft, reveals some surprising results. Ninety percent of identity fraud in which the source can be determined takes place through traditional means, not as a result of the Internet.
Don't Be a Victim
Lost or stolen wallets, checkbooks, and credit cards account for 30 percent of cases in which identity thieves gain access to personal information. That's right, it's the most frequent way that identities are stolen -- more than online transactions, more than stolen mail, and more than computer hacking.
According to the survey, the No. 1 misperception surrounding identity theft is that consumers are helpless to protect themselves. The truth is that many causes of identity theft are beyond our control. But taking a proactive stance to detect fraud will keep you from being a victim.
Here are six things you need to know to fight back against identity theft:
1. Keep your private information private.
Half of all identity theft in which the thief is identified is committed by a friend, coworker, neighbor, in-home employee, or relative of the victim. So make it a habit not to leave things lying around at home or in the office -- specifically your wallet, checkbook, or anything else containing private or financial information, including your mail.
Also, before you toss anything in the trash containing your private information, be sure to shred it. This isn't new advice, but I'd be remiss not to mention it.
2. Get a copy of your credit reports.
Often, victims of identity theft have no idea their credit is being used or destroyed until they apply for a loan and pull their credit score. So pull your credit report now, and make a plan to check it regularly.
By law, you're entitled to a free credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus -- Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion -- once every year. Go to AnnualCreditReport.com and stagger your requests so that you'll receive one report from each credit bureau every four months. Put the dates on your calendar so you don't forget. Keep in mind that this is for your free credit report only, not your credit score.
For your credit score, you'll need to go to myFICO. While you're there, you may want to check out their Identity Theft Security Deluxe product, which monitors your credit score and credit report automatically for $49.95 a year.
3. Find out if your state has a credit freeze law.
Here's a virtually foolproof way to prevent a thief from stealing your identity and using your personal data to get approved for credit. With this new law you're able to block ("freeze") all access to your credit report and credit score.
It's not necessarily the most convenient solution to protect yourself from fraud. Anytime you need to have your credit checked -- for instance, if you're buying a car or cell phone or even interviewing for a job -- you'll need to lift the block ("thaw" your record), which takes about three days. But if you have real concerns about identity theft or perhaps are already a victim, this is an option you may want to consider.
Some states will only grant a credit freeze if you're already a victim of identity theft. Find out if your state has a credit freeze law, including what it costs, by visiting FinancialPrivacyNow.org.
4. Check your bank statements weekly.
One of the great things about online banking is that you can log on and check your account at any time. Make a point of checking your bank statement weekly to be sure there aren't any red flags.
The same goes for your credit card statements. In fact, you may want to consider canceling your paper statements altogether and opting for online statements. After all, you're more likely to have personal information stolen from your mail than from the Internet.
That said, be sure to always use a secure computer. Using a public computer, like one at your local library, is risky due to tracking software that thieves can use to steal your passwords.
5. Be computer savvy.
Even though a relatively small percentage of identity theft occurs online, you should still take necessary precautions.
In addition to being careful about surfing the web on public computers, you should also be aware of the risks involved when using a wireless connection. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are becoming increasingly popular, and as a result there's bound to be an increase in wireless hacking.
Wireless connectivity is the perfect platform for thieves to get your personal data. If you have a wireless network at home or work, make sure you're incorporating password-protection and encryption. When accessing public hotspots, use a personal firewall.
Also, keep your computer safe by updating your antivirus and anti-spyware programs regularly. Use passwords so that others can't log on to your computer, laptop, or even your PDA, and be sure to change your passwords often.
Be smart about phishing scams, too. That's when you're sent an email that requests your personal or financial information, or that prompts you to click a link to provide your personal or financial information. If you're unsure of the legitimacy of such a request, call the company that it was supposedly sent from. If an email seems suspicious, it usually is.
6. Be aware of "deleted" data.
The Washington Post recently ran an article on mobile phones -- specifically "smartphones" like the Palm Treo and BlackBerry -- that was quite an eye-opener.
According to the story, resetting your phone to wipe out personal data doesn't exactly delete information. It turns out that your phone's operating system never actually deletes data, only the pointers to where the data is located. Anyone with the right software can recover information that was stored on your phone once you sell or discard it
You need to do is contact the device manufacturer for complete instructions on what to do to wipe your data clean. You can also visit WirelessRecycling.com for instructions. And think twice about what information you store on your device in case it's ever lost or stolen.
If Your Identity Is Stolen
Take the above steps and -- should you ever find yourself in the unfortunate position of having had your identity stolen -- you'll commend yourself for being proactive enough to identify a problem before too much damage was done.
Don't waste a minute once you've discovered suspicious activity -- go directly to the website of the Federal Trade Commission to file a complaint and access their comprehensive guide on the steps you'll need to follow to resolve the situation.

Happy Thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for!
I am sending your email here to my friends...
You had a 222 favorite for a living will and something else I have to go back and find it, as it would have been good to have this past week!
I even told the health care workers about finding it there. We thought it was very well written. Much better than the one in the hospitals. And I have had my own version of limitations refused by two hospitals recently. And it is basically what you have! No extraordinary means when all is hopeless for a good life is not possible. We know people who are in vegetative states because they were kept alive when they should have been let go. (We all Remember Terri)

I am relieved that this is a joyous day! Because again Rich is with me.
We have told our friends we want to be alone, no fan fair. IE no dinner together. Very different from last year's holidays! Gosh that was one party to another! That was so much fun being the person to help decorate and organize! Nice memories.

Like my family made the most wonderful memories of Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Oh yes, Mom loved Halloween.

May you have a wonderful day and season! And I am so happy I found you both! You cheer me endlessly! I go to your site for a chuckle or information.. And always love finding new stuff or old stuff I haven't gotten to!

Blessing to you both. You are treasures! And I knew you are busy with the many many things you do and people sending you stuff, So I am always honored and pleased when you send a note back! All smiles. Love ME

Dear Suddenly Senior Reader,
This Thanksgiving, I want you to know how grateful we are for you, our wise and wonderful reader.
Thank you, first, for joining us in this astonishing journey we call getting old.
Thank you for giving Carolyn and me a banner year with Suddenly Senior. More readers at the site, more readers signed up as you are to get the column each week. More readers signed up for the weekly jokes, too. And even more newspapers syndicating Suddenly Senior in 2006; there are now 70 publications in the US and Canada that run the column regularly for a total circulation of close to 3-million.
Thank you, also, for giving your trust and your business to our advertisers. Without them, we'd have to get real jobs.
Thanks, too, for sending us almost 60,000 jokes this year so far. Little wonder Carolyn is able to send you the best jokes every week. They all come from you, and you, and you.
And, to all of you who send e-mails, e-cards, cards and letters wishing me a fast and complete recovery from my recent prostate operation, I can't thank you enough. I was truly overwhelmed by your kindness. As soon as I've completely recovered, I'll write a column about my adventures in roto-rooting. We have a great community here at Suddenly Senior.
I'm reminded of that daily when Carolyn and I read your e-mails. You folks tell us stuff you wouldn't tell your spouse. That's real trust, and we value and guard your confidence truly with our lives.
As we enter Suddenly Senior's eighth year, we'd like your help. In an effort to do the best job possible, we need to know exactly how you feel about the Suddenly Senior column, the weekly jokes, and our Senior News that now goes out about three times a day.
What pleases you? What doesn't? What would you like to see more of? Less of? Where do you think we're missing the boat? What would you like to see new columns about? Do you think we send out too many e-mails at Senior News? Too few? What? What? What?
Please go to http://www.suddenlysenior.com/ and let us know what you think about the Suddenly Senior site. Is it easy to find things? No? Tell us about it. What would you like to see that isn't there? Would you like access to seven years worth of jokes, not just one week? Perhaps a bulletin board where you could sound off to fellow Suddenly Seniors about all manner of things?
You see, Suddenly Senior is as much yours as ours. We want to make it as helpful and entertaining as possible for you.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. We all have so much for which to be grateful. And Carolyn and I wish you the merriest of Christmas Holidays.
Warmest regards,Frank & Carolyn Kaiser

While I was looking for the ones I want I did find these...of the many...
This link is good to check out.
http://www.uslwr.com/search.asp?searchTerm=living+will

Make your choices known in an advance directive.
An advance directive is a legal document in which you state how you want to be treated if you become very ill and there is no reasonable hope for your recovery. Although laws vary from state to state, there are basically two kinds of advance directives.
1. A living will is a legal document in which you state the kind of health care you want or don't want under certain circumstances.
2. A health care proxy (or durable health care power of attorney) is a legal document in which you name someone close to you to make decisions about your health care if you become incapacitated.
You can have both - a health care proxy naming a person to make the decisions, and a living will to help guide that person in making the decisions.
In order for your advance directive to be useful, it has to be available. After all, your advance directive won't do you any good if no one can find it.
Mission Statement
The mission of the U.S. Living Will Registry is to promote the use of advance directives through educational programs and to make people's health care choices available to their caregivers and families whenever and wherever they are needed, while maintaining the confidentiality of their information and documents.
The U.S. Living Will Registry has solved many of the problems historically associated with advance directives. Read the list of problems below, followed by a description of how the Registry has helped solve that particular problem.
Problem: People don't know what advance directives are.
Solution: The U.S. Living Will Registry helps educate the public about advance directives through this web site, it's printed brochure
"Will Your Health Care Choices Be Honored If You Become Incapacitated?", and its highly acclaimed "Living Will Fair" Guide that gives step-by-step instructions to health care providers on how to sponsor an educational community event about advance directives.
Problem: People don't know how to prepare an advance directive.
Solution: The U.S. Living Will Registry provides resources on this web site that will help people learn how to prepare an advance directive. The Advance Directive Forms page gives background instructions on what you should consider in preparing the document, and also has links to sites containing the form specific for your state.
Problem: People don't know where to store their advance directive.
Solution: People are commonly told to give copies of their advance directive to their family members, doctor and attorney. But when the time comes to find the document, it is usually not available.
By definition, these documents are prepared well in advance of when they will be needed, and they are commonly put away for "safe keeping". This makes them difficult to find during the stressful period when you're ill and the document needs to be found. In addition, you may become ill while away from home, and most people do not carry their advance directive with them when they travel.
By registering your advance directive with the U.S. Living Will Registry, you can rest assured that hospitals and health care providers across the country will have access to your document no matter where or when it is needed.
See the "How it Works" section below for details.

Advance Directive Forms http://www.uslwr.com/forms.shtm
Preparing an advance directive involves more than simply filling out a form. The time you spend thinking about the kind of care you want, or don't want, and discussing your wishes with your family and loved ones is much more meaningful than simply checking off boxes on a form. The written document is a good way to memorialize and record your thoughts and choices, but it is no substitute for time spent discussing those choices with your loved ones.
You might want to start out by visiting the American Bar Association's web site to learn the basics about advance directives.
Then visit "On Our Own Terms" and read page 14 of the Discussion Guide. This will help focus your thoughts on what decisions you need to make now so that your choices will be followed when the need arises.
When you are ready to prepare your document, remember that each state has its own law, and sometimes, its own form. While it is usually not necessary to have an attorney help you prepare an advance directive, you may want to consult an attorney if the various forms you obtain do not fit your needs or if you have any special concerns.

Here are some sources for advance directive forms:
Your local hospital - Federal law requires all hospitals to provide information about advance directives to people in their communities, including information about the laws in your state. You can obtain information and a form by contacting the Patient Representative or Department of Social Services at your hospital.
The ABA site provides information and a good list of resources.
The states listed below are linked to web sites that provide free advance directive forms. These links are provided as an easy and convenient way for you to find a form for your state.
The U.S. Living Will Registry does not provide legal advice or legal services, and the Registry does not represent that the forms provided by these sites are legally valid. The Registry is not responsible for the content of the forms on these sites.
State laws sometimes change, making forms obsolete. You should check with an attorney to make sure that the advance directive you prepare complies with the law in your state.
Click on your state to download an advance directive form.
When you click on one of the links listed below you will be leaving the U.S. Living Will Registry's web site.

A lot is repeated with the q&a and I found the catch...
Registration is FREE.
U.S. Living Will Registry provides this service to registrants without charge so that everyone can participate.
You must register through a member Health Care Provider or Community Partner. Visit the "How to Register" page for instructions. The Registry is funded by Health Care Providers who pay an annual fee for unlimited access to the Registry's automated system, and so that their patients are able to register documents with the Registry.
Also, Community Partners of the Registry (attorneys, accountants, financial planners, community organizations, senior citizen groups, retailers, automobile clubs, etc.) pay an annual fee so their members, clients or customers can register their documents.
In this way, the service can be offered to registrants free of charge, and cost will never be a barrier to someone who wants to register this important document.

Protect Your Vote: Here's What You Can Do

The graphics will not show here so I am going to write what they say...
this was actually printed Nov 3. And I found it on the 7th and it has taken me this long to remember to put it here. ...
I have been seeing this sign a few places....with the hands...
There is a poster with hands reaching upward that says;
Checklist for a fair election.

These are important days to remember there are things to do!
11/6 BEFORE ELECTION DAY
11/7 ON ELECTION DAY
11/8 AFTER ELECTION DAY
2008 INTO THE FUTURE

Building a Just and Sustainable WorldNovember 2006

12 WAYS YOU CAN SAFEGUARD THE VOTE
Will it happen again? On November 7 we may see voters waiting in long lines, only to find they’re not on the voter rolls. We may see election workers struggling with malfunctioning machines. If you’re worried that we will wake up November 8 to find that, once again, election procedures in key races are in question, read on.
The staff at YES! Magazine has researched the recommendations of voting integrity advocates and offers 12 ways you can protect your own vote—and the fairness of the system. Please forward this checklist to others to help make our election system work.

11/6 BEFORE ELECTION DAY
1. Check your registration. Even if you think you're registered, you may not be. Check online at
www.CanIVote.org. Or call your local election officials (find contact information at Overseas Vote Foundation).
2. Mail with care. If you’re voting by mail, check carefully where you need to sign, how to seal the envelope, and how to mark the ballot. And note: Some ballots weigh more than an ounce and require extra postage.
3. Find out who’s in charge. Make a phone list of your county and state election officials—it may save valuable time on Election Day if you need to get registration verification or other information.

11/7 ON ELECTION DAY
4. Vote early. If you encounter problems, you'll have time to sort them out and may be able to help others.

5. Take your government-issued ID (such as your driver's license). You may not need it, but it's best to have it.
6. Bring your cell phone, if you have one. If you have problems, or see problems, you can call a hotline immediately (see point #9).
7. Ask for a paper ballot. Some states, such as California, require polling places to have paper ballots available on request. If you don't want to use a machine, see if your polling place can provide a paper ballot. If machines aren't working or there are other problems, ask for an emergency ballot (although they may not be available everywhere).
8. Verify your vote. If you’re voting on an electronic voting machine, check the review screen to make sure it reflects your vote. If the machine produces a paper record (28 states require one), read it carefully to make sure it correctly reflects your vote. If it is incorrect, speak to a polling attendant—don’t leave until you’re sure your vote has been properly recorded.
9. Document and report. If you encounter difficulties, or see others experiencing difficulties (excessive lines, voter harassment, malfunctioning machines, etc.), make a detailed record. Get all the facts you can—location, names, specific problem.
We recommend two nationwide networks where you can report problems. One is 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683), which will have volunteer lawyers in 15 locations standing by to provide assistance.
The other is 1-866 My Vote-1 (1-866-698-6831), which will record your problem by voicemail, then forward your call to your local board of elections. Both will enter the information you provide into a database to use to support challenges to problem elections now and demands for reform in the future.

11/8 AFTER ELECTION DAY
10. Call your candidate. If there are questions about an election result, urge your candidate not to concede early; encourage that person to follow through with all available challenges and recounts. Ask how you can help.

11. Call your election officials. Let your county and state election officials know that you have concerns about the election and will be monitoring their response. Ask them not to certify the election before all challenges and recounts are finished.

2008 INTO THE FUTURE
12. Work for fair, transparent elections. Voice your questions about voting machines, vote suppression, and election problems promptly. Keep the issue in front of your election officials. If we want clean, trustworthy elections in 2008, we have to start working on it now.

Halloween Jokes for the week...

Humor for the Season

From one of my favorite HPS'.
This link will put you to their current jokes for the week.
http://www.suddenlysenior.com/jokeslatest.html
It tickles me when they publish the jokes I share from my friends.
Some of this week's best Halloween/Samhain jokes. For the Week of 10/29.
A BIT OF HISTORY:
Samhain, (pronounced SOW-in,) means "End of Summer".
Originally this "Feast of the Dead" was celebrated in Celtic countries by leaving food offerings on altars and doorsteps for the "wandering dead."
Today, many of us still carry out that tradition. Single candles are lit and left in a window to help guide the spirits of ancestors and loved ones home. Extra chairs are set to the table and around the hearth for the unseen guest.
Apples are buried along roadsides and paths for spirits who were lost or had no descendants to provide for them. Pumpkins are hollowed out and carved to light the way, for this is a night when the veils between the worlds is the thinnest and spirits abound. Blessed Be.

GRAVEYARD
Two men were walking home after a party and decided to take a shortcut through the cemetery just for laughs.
Right in the middle of the cemetery they were startled by a tap-tap-tapping noise coming from the misty shadows.
Trembling with fear, they found an old man with a hammer and chisel, chipping away at one of the headstones.
"Holy cow, Mister," one of them said after catching his breath. "You scared us half to death -- we thought you were a ghost! What are you doing working here so late at night?"
"Those fools!" the old man grumbled. "They misspelled my name!"

What do you call a ghost's mother and father ? Transparents.

ARE YOU TOO OLD FOR TRICK OR TREATING?
You get winded from knocking on the door.
You have to have another kid chew the candy for you.
You ask for high fiber candy only.
When someone drops a candy bar in your bag, you lose your balance and fall over.
People say, "Great Keith Richards mask!" and you're not wearing a mask. When the door opens you yell, "Trick or..." and can't remember the rest.
By the end of the night, you have a bag full of restraining orders.
You have to carefully choose a costume that won't dislodge your
hairpiece.
You're the only Power Ranger in the neighborhood with a walker.
You avoid going to houses where your ex-wives live.

FROM THE BARD
Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire, burn; and caldron, bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the caldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire, burn; and caldron, bubble.

Why do mummies have trouble keeping friends?
They're too wrapped up in themselves.
