Which foods are toxic to cats and dogs?

A new site from a friend. You have a question? Want an answer? Check out Wise Geek

As people have become more health conscious, so have they been paying more attention to the health needs of the furry members of the family. To this end many animal lovers have become aware that the majority of commercial pet foods contain unhealthy ingredients and have shifted instead to sharing the refrigerator and cupboards. While natural, fresh food is far healthier than byproducts and preservatives, keep in mind that the foods listed below are known to be toxic to cats and dogs because of the different ways animals metabolize them.

Chocolate: Although many people are aware that chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs, it's something that is commonly left on a table or counter top. Dogs may tear into a box of candy when the opportunity presents itself. In large quantities, chocolate causes coma and death. In lesser quantities, it will cause gastrointestinal problems including diarrhea. The degree of toxicity depends on the weight of the animal and the amount and type of chocolate consumed. Semi-sweet and bakers chocolate, for instance, contain more theobromine than regular chocolate, making them even more toxic to animals. Dogs love chocolate, so don't let taste be a test of what is healthy. Anything containing cocoa or chocolate should be avoided.

Grapes & Raisins: Though it isn't clear to scientists just what makes grapes and raisins toxic to both cats and dogs, even a relatively small amount can damage the kidneys. For this reason it's unwise to feed these to your pet, even if small amounts are tolerated. Also avoid giving bits of cookie or other foods that contain raisins.

Garlic, Onions, and Powders: Whether fresh, cooked or powdered, garlic and/or onions can be found among the ingredients of many prepared meals, including baby food. Garlic and onions can be toxic to cats and dogs because sulfoxides and disulfides found in them can damage red blood cells and lead to anemia. Onions are more problematic than garlic, but both should be avoided. If preparing a meal for yourself that will contain garlic or onions, consider preparing a side portion without these ingredients for your animals.

Macadamia Nuts: Macadamia nuts are soft, light-colored nuts often used in cookie recipes. They are considered toxic to dogs because they tend to cause gastrointestinal upsets, lethargy, vomiting and muscle tremors or stiffness.

Mushrooms: Various species of mushrooms are toxic to dogs, and can cause shock and death. Effects will differ depending on the type ingested, but avoid feeding any type. Pluck "backyard mushrooms" that might sprout on the lawn, as these are known to be toxic to canines.

Tomatoes and tomato plants: Tomatoes of all kinds are toxic to cats, as are parts of the tomato plant. Ingesting as little as a cherry tomato can cause severe gastrointestinal upset.

Chicken Bones: Though not toxic, chicken bones can get stuck in the roof of the mouth, throat and intestines, and should be avoided, according to many veterinarians. Splinters of chicken bones can also become lodged internally.

Other foods to avoid include raw potatoes, especially those containing green spots; turkey skin; nutmeg; and anything with caffeine, including tea. Alcohol and hops should also be avoided as alcohol poisoning can lead to coma and death. Do not allow your pet to rummage through the trash, as moldy food contains toxins that can cause serious illness.

Since many of the signs of toxicity are similar, call your veterinarian immediately if your pet appears distressed, lethargic or in pain. Bloody stools or vomiting are also possible signs of toxic poisoning. Gastrointestinal problems can lead to gas build-up until the stomach becomes distended or bloated and hard to the touch. This is a painful condition that can cause the stomach to burst if not treated. The good news is that, in most cases, treatment for toxic poisoning can be successful if administered in time.

Feeding cats and dogs a healthy, balanced diet of natural foods as described by many veterinarians today is a great improvement over processed commercial pet food. By following a few simple rules, you can ensure that pets or animal companions can potentially lead longer, healthier and happier lives. Learn all about Aspartame & Splenda !

I have been saying since these products came out for artificial sweeteners, that if it kills the lab rats it will kill us. Now there is proof that there was even a small amount adminstered that caused death. Including brought one animal back to life as a case study, and then died again. No it is that fraud was part of the process of getting aproved. This is a very detailed report of why you should not feel that it is some harmless, other form of safe sugar. Please read and take action. Don't open the little packages, and try to choose products without it included! This includes years of study and information you should not miss learning about. We need more people to get the Truth out to the Public! LI

IMPORTANT UPDATE June 25, 2007
UPDATE June 25, 2007 CSPI Urges Consumers To Avoid Aspartame
The CSPI, the Consumer Science Protection Institute issued a warning to consumers today in a press release. Full CSPI Story

As a result of the new study Ramazzini Foundation, the CSPI downgraded aspartame with their warning to consumers from "use caution" rating to "everyone should avoid aspartame." The CSPI also urges everyone to avoid the artificial sweeteners acesulfame potassium an saccharin. It rates sucralose, also known by the brand name Splenda, as safe, which I do not agree with. Later on, I'll tell you why Splenda is not safe as well...why? It is basically made from chlorine.
The Ramazzini Foundation new study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, found statistically that aspartame significantly increases lymphomas and leukemias in rats. The rats were fed as little as 20 milligrams of the sweetener per kilogram of body weight which is an amount of what some people consume. The new study is superior to a similar one released in 2005 which exposed rats to aspartame before their birth.
This is a significant move by the CSPI who finally is joining those of us who have informing consumers for over the last ten years not to consume aspartame.

UPDATE 4-29-07 DOES A NEW STUDY SHOW THAT ALTERATIONS ON GENES
IN VARIOUS ORGANS IN ANIMALS OCCUR WHEN ANY AMOUNT OF ASPARTAME INGESTED?
YES !
The following study below was published January, 2007 in the Hungary VIVO Jouarnal. The study was performed by the Institute of Public Health in Hungary and can be found on the National Institutes of Health website. It is a very significant study that shows that aspartame ALTERS genes in various organs, especially, lymphoreticular organs, bone-marrow and kidney organs in rats receiving aspartame. Lymphoreticular organs are your immune system, lymph nodes etc. This shows that aspartame ALTERS the genes in these organs, thus, this can result in disease. Any time a gene is altered by any source, chemical, radiation or food allergies, it can cause diseases.
Dr. Janet Starr Hull, PhD UPDATE 10-1-2005 NEW BOOK JUST PUBLISHED ON SPLENDA®
September 2, 2005 Splenda®: Is It Safe or Not? Dr. Janet Hull has a new book that was just published on September 1st, 2005. Splenda® is just as deadly as aspartame. (below)

What is the chemical makeup of Splenda®?
SPLENDA ® Sweeteners Get SPLENDA ® Sweetener Products . A Delicious Alternative To Sugar. Will not open for important notice at the bottom.
Sucralose also known as Splenda® is synthesized by this five-step process: Poisons!
What foods have had complaints from having this added. With the warning: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Since 1970, more than 100 research studies have confirmed serious adverse reactions to Aspartame. Yet...aspartame was given approval by the FDA for limited use on July 26, 1974 as a free flowing substitute, tablets for sweetening hot beverages, ( this is deadly because heat creates the neuro-toxin methanol ), cereals, gum, and dry bases.
An 11 year old girl repeated an experiment
MOST IMPORTANTLY - JENNIFER'S STUDY SHOWED: The aspartame contained in diet soda stored over time breaks down into formaldehyde and DKP, two very dangerous poisons. Taste tests revealed a noticeable difference among tasters as well. The higher the heat of storage, the worse the taste.
Formaldehyde Is A Deadly Neurotoxin! Formaldehyde a known carcinogen. It is known to cause Squamous Cell Carcinoma in experimental animals. It causes retinal damages, interferes with DNA replication and causes birth defects. Formaldehyde stores itself in fat cells, particularly on the hips and thighs. It is potentially toxic to the retina and optic nerve. These organs are highly vulnerable to metabolic disturbances and neurotoxins because of their unique metabolic requirements. Methanol and its by products cause swelling of the optic nerve and degeneration of ganglion cells in the retina. Repeated exposure to low doses of formaldehyde are shown to cause a wide range of health problems, ( John 19194, Liu 1991, Molhave, 1986, National Research Council 1981, page 175-220, Sirvasta 1992

Found on http://www.splendaexposed.com/articles/2005/02/weird_science_h.html Totally amazing what is written here! Now we know. *And one comment was that we could not consume the amount the lab rats do, which is not true according to the article first offered.

Posted by: Patricia Brummel at March 4, 2005 Very informative and very interesting. An article worth passing along.

Posted by: Dr. Janet Starr Hull at March 13, 2005 Thank you for the support. I, like most of us, was hoping Splenda would be a solution to the toxic aspartame travesty responsible for deteriorating the health of young and old over the past twenty years. When I began my research into Splenda over 2 years ago, I was disappointed to learn that it is just another chemical "trick" to support the modern-day chemical food dependencies of the sugar-free lifestyle. Wouldn't it be nice to see marketers promote true healthy products? But, unfortunately it's not with Splenda.

Posted by: highschoollifter at April 14, 2005 *here's my opinion. Even if sucralose is a carcinogen, the amount one would need to digest is beyond our capability of consuming! I have read numerous reports documenting that ounces and ounces of splenda would have to be consumed daily for yrs in order to have somewhat of a risk. Sadly people abuse articficial sweetners these days, especially crazy atkin dieters. When used correctly, (such as a BRIEF diet period and not consumed everyday like too many people do), sucralose is a great diet aid, but not a miracle

Posted by: Natilie at April 18, 2005 THANK YOU SO MUCH for this very helpful and extremely informative information! I am doing a research proposal for my psych' class and you have put into plain words what other studies and web sites have not, plus you stated obvious concerns that should be at the front of all of our minds when it comes to consuming artificial anything!!! Thanx again, hopefully I will get an A+!

Posted by: Dr. Janet Starr Hull at April 26, 2005 I wish everyone was so disciplined, but most are not. It is easy to slip into the habit of drinking a 12 pack of diet cola while at work every day. And, then there's the sweetener blends, where you get two or three diet chemical sweeteners in one product. What a chemical cocktail! And, if you are sick, ill or weak with kidney disease or bladder problems, MS or Parkinson’s, for example, these chemicals only weaken the body more. Diabetics tend to use way too many chemical sweeteners trying to maintain what they think is a normal diet. And children – wow! They are learning that there are no limits to what they want - eat and drink all you desire with no penalty. (Hence, childhood obesity is off the charts!)

I think one of the biggest issues here is the lack of good communication about the downside of these products and exactly how and when to use them while maintaining a whole foods diet.

Which is a good thing cause this is of course not your only source to finding this information. I posted this So you have this information which is so important! We are being ruthlessly sabataged, mamed, suffer at the hands of big business for profit. Does it make sence to kill off your way to have a living. I guess it could be looked at a population control plan? Give us Cancer and we die. Thus helps with the world problem of feeding and housing us? Oh that is my twisted way of looking at why people (companies) would deliberately poison human beings. Boycott things that are bad for you! As you'll see there is very little it takes to cause sickness and death. Glad I found proof to what I have been saying all along! People's work is very valued and respected by LI. And when there is something very important to share I believe it is what the consumer needs to be given access to and why they should follow a link!

FDA testing dog treats pulled from Wal-Mart - Pet Health - MSNBC.com
Wal-Mart pulls tainted dog treats Aug. 22: Wal-Mart says two brands of dog treats tested positive for small amounts of melamine.

Wal-Mart said 17 tests showed trace levels of melamine, the same pesticide byproduct that led to a widespread pet food recall in March after an unknown number of dogs and cats died. More than 150 brands of pet food were recalled after U.S. inspectors said wheat gluten from China that was used to make the food was tainted with melamine.

She also said the FDA had reviewed Wal-Mart’s lab report that mentions 20 parts per million of melamine. “This level of melamine would not be expected to result in any animal illness,” Rawlings said. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20390237

When this first came out. I sent the articles to every one I knew. Meant to add here. Hey if something makes you sick or kills, don't risk it! It is not worth it as I have animals at home from the first poisoned food and am waiting for them to die at home. As my vet says try to find a food that they don't react to; perhaps they will respond to food that does not impair their kidney function. But I have decided not to put 150 cc into them by their shoulders every other day. I am just going to offer them the most comfort and love possible. And wait and see. It is heart breaking not to be able to change what has happened and wondering how many more will die. As they are the light and joy in my world. I first found out when the symptoms were noticed I did not know what it was about. Then I took one of my little female kittens to get spayed. She had sudden renal failure and died within hours, never waking from anisthesia. This was because of the compromised kidneys. The shock was heart breaking.
But I had a maternal feeling that I had to be with her. I tried to get back to her before she let go of her little life. And by the time I was allowed to go to the back, her eyes were wide. The girl pulled across the cage her by the ear and poked her! I am shocked that someone would do this in front of me, and how dumb can you be if you work with Death every day that you need to violate her? I craddled her in my arms and sang a song of Spirit. Told her to hurry to the Happy Hunting Grounds to be with my 13 year old that had died last year in May with impacted bladder. Cheap food especially affects males with this. As that was the second male to have that happen. The first I did the surgery as he was only 4. My vet was worried about the cause of her dying. So I told her to rush as I didn't want her to be shocked by being put into a plastic bag and into the freezer before she was ready. I shortly said they could have her, as she had listened to me. The same girl asked how I knew? Besides 'feeling' she was not with me, her body fluids were all on my shirt. So I knew she had gone with knowing that I loved her and she was not totally alone at the time when we parted. I think that there are reasons for every thing. Perhaps this was meant to be her way of leaving? I don't know. But I am not in a hurry to see if it would happen to the other females I have. I keep a photo of her cuddled in my lap where I see and think of her every day, as the others who have parted this Earth.
Then I found that I had been feeding them 2 of the brands that were affected. And I am reluctant to castrate the rest of them for fear of the same fate would be bestowed. And out of a noisy house and frustrated girls in the house why would I do it? Because if they get out they'll make more. There is such a thing as abortion and adoption. There is choice. Life or Death. Literally. I choose Life! LI
