Luxury Amtrak travel coming soon; book your travel air, ship, ... find train photos and more

Patrons on an Amtrak train to South Florida will be able to order five-course meals, enjoy butler service and sleep in stylish comfort amid elegant vintage furnishings, under a deal announced Wednesday.

Amtrak's Silver Meteor train between Washington, D.C., and South Florida will offer deluxe service on restored private rail cars for two months this winter.

The nation's publicly owned rail service will partner with GrandLuxe Rail Journeys, which will attach seven of its classic coaches to the Amtrak train.

Prices for the two-day, one-night trip on the GrandLuxe Limited begin at $789. There are 40 departures scheduled between Nov. 6 and Jan.4.

The service is part of a fuller schedule of holiday train trips intended to broaden exposure to GrandLuxe's high-end rail excursions, which typically last longer than seven days and cost several thousand dollars.

Six other routes will get joint Amtrak/GrandLuxe trains, including Chicago-Los Angeles and Chicago-San Francisco.

The Silver Meteor makes several scheduled stops in Broward and Palm Beach counties, but the GrandLuxe Limited passengers will be segregated from the rest of the train. It isn't clear whether passengers on the Limited service will be able to board or depart at interim stops made between Washington, D.C., and Miami.

After the shorter holiday excursions, the GrandLuxe cars will return to their longer trips, such as a seven-night Grand Canyon & the Southwest itinerary scheduled for most of January and February. Prices for that journey start at $3,500.

In total, GrandLuxe offers 13 itineraries, most in the western United States, aboard a 21-car train.

Based in Evergreen, Colo., GrandLuxe was formed in 2006 by Tom Rader, who also owns Colorado Railcar, a manufacturer of dome cars for excursions such as those offered by cruise lines in Alaska. Rader started the firm after acquiring the assets of American Orient Express, another operator of luxury rail vacations.

About the Abby: Set in 36 acres of parkland at the heart of Glastonbury, the Abbey is steeped in 2000 years of history and legend. Now it is being vividly brought to life with the help of actors who play the parts of monks and a kitchen maid. The performance takes place in the Abbot's Kitchen, creating an authentic medieval environment.
The actors tell tales from the time of the Abbey about how the monks lived, the church services they attended and the food and drink available to them. It was at the Abbey in 1191 that the monks (sought and) found the remains of King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere, and their bones were reburied in 1278 inside the Abbey church. They remained there until the Abbey was vandalised after the dissolution, and no-one has seen or heard of them since.
As legend has it, the first Christian sanctuary in Britain it was visited by Joseph of Arimathea, Saint David and Saint Patrick.
Many believe that the Holy Thorn tree that can be seen in the grounds originated from Joseph of Arimathea’s staff, and others are convinced that King Arthur really was buried there.
Whatever one believes, the facts are that the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey are magnificent and the grounds are a haven provide a spot of peace and tranquillity .

Arrived on site (51° 10.689' N, 1° 49.514' W) at 03:30 BST June 21st. Sunrise at 04:55 BST. Left at 06:00 BST. Weather - clear, warm night with some light cloud at dawn. Mars visible, setting, at perigee. Venus visible, rising. Today is New Moon, with a total solar eclipse visible across Africa. Atmosphere - excellent, no trouble. More people than last year (possibly 10000) including drummers, pipers, fire eaters and jugglers.
