VILLAHERMOSA, Mexico - Hundreds of thousands of Mexicans fled a flooded region of the Gulf coast Friday, jumping from rooftops into rescue helicopters, scrambling into boats or swimming out through murky brown water. President Felipe Calderon called the flooding in Tabasco state one of Mexico's worst recent natural disasters, and pledged to rebuild.

A week of heavy rains caused rivers to overflow, drowning at least 80 percent of the oil-rich state. Much of the state capital, Villahermosa, looked like New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, with water reaching to second-story rooftops and desperate people awaiting rescue.

At least one death was reported and nearly all services, including drinking water and public transportation, were shut down. The flood affected more than 900,000 people in the state of 2 million — their homes flooded, damaged or cut off by high water.

A 10-inch natural gas pipeline sprang a leak after flooding apparently washed away soil underneath it, but it was unclear if other facilities operated by the state-run Petroleos Mexicanos were damaged or if oil production was affected.

Workers tried to protect Villahermosa's famous Olmec statues by placing sandbag collars around their enormous stone heads, and built sandbag walls to hold back the Grijalva River in the state capital.

But the water rose quickly, surprising residents used to annual floods and forcing soldiers to evacuate the historic city center. The dikes failed Thursday night, and water swamped the capital's bus station and open-air market.

Rain gave way to sunshine Friday, but tens of thousands of people were still stranded on rooftops or in the upper floors of their homes. Rescue workers used tractors, helicopters, jet skis and boats to ferry people to safety, while others swam through water infested by poisonous snakes to reach higher ground.

Calderon met with state officials and flew over the affected areas. The extent of the flooding was clear from the sky — Tabasco state seemed like an inland sea with only rooftops and treetops protruding from the water.

"This is not just the worst natural catastrophe in the state's history but, I would venture to say, one of the worst in the recent history of the country," Calderon said Friday during an emergency meeting with state officials in Villahermosa.

The president ordered the armed forces and federal police to maintain order and prevent looting, and asked residents to remain calm. He canceled a trip to Panama, Colombia and Peru.

"Once we have passed the critical stage ... we are going to reconstruct Tabasco, whatever it takes," Calderon said.

Mexicans rallied around the disaster, with people across the country contributing money and supplies. Television stations dedicated entire newscasts to the flooding and morning shows switched from yoga and home improvement to calls for aid. Friday was the Day of the Dead holiday, but banks opened to accept donations for flood victims.

Food and clean drinking water were extremely scarce in Tabasco state, and federal Deputy Health Secretary Mauricio Hernandez warned that there could be outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases.

"With so many people packed together there is a chance that infectious diseases could spread," he said.

Officials tested for 600 suspected cases of cholera, but none was positive, he said. The waterborne sickness, which can be fatal, has not been reported in Mexico for at least six years.

The government also sent 20,000 Hepatitis A vaccinations and were giving booster shots to children to prevent outbreaks, Hernandez said.

Medical care was difficult, however, because at least 50 of the state's hospitals and medical centers were flooded.

Hotels, parking garages and other dry structures were converted into temporary shelters for those forced from their homes.

Guadalupe de la Cruz, a receptionist at the Hotel Calinda Viva Villahermosa, said the hotel's meeting rooms were being used as shelters for employees' families. She said the 240-room hotel was completely booked, mostly by people who had fled their homes.

Many people were headed to nearby cities unaffected by the floods. Highways that weren't covered with water were packed with residents fleeing in cars and on foot. The exodus appeared to be orderly with no reports of violence.

Villahermosa resident Mauricio Hernandez, 27, who is not related to the federal official, paid a taxi to go to Cardenas, 30 miles away. From there, he planned to hop a bus to the port city of Coatzacoalcos.

"We are leaving because we cannot live like this," he said. "We don't have any water, and the shelters are full. Where are we going to go?"

State officials sent 50 buses to a museum in the capital where hundreds of people gathered.

"We wanted to stay in the city but it is no longer possible," said Jorge Rodriguez, 43. "We have lost everything." By ANTONIO VILLEGAS, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 43 minutes ago

Dalai Lama Becomes Emory Professor

ATLANTA - The Dalai Lama was formally installed as a professor at Emory University on Monday as Tibetan monks wearing large moon-shaped, yellow hats chanted and played cymbals, gongs and horns.

The exiled Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader, whose face is recognized around the world, now is the bearer of a faculty ID card.
"I suspect you will not need to carry this with you for identification, but in any case, we wanted you to know you are welcome," student Emily Allen said as she handed him the card, a present from the students.
In his first speech as a faculty member, the Dalai Lama encouraged his audience of thousands of people to look beyond money and fame for happiness. Education paired with destructive behavior is wasted, but knowledge used for good is a powerful instrument, he said.
"As a professor of this university, I think you should listen to me," the 72-year-old monk and Nobel Peace Prize laureate said with a laugh.
During the weekend, he delivered a lecture on the basics of Buddhism to thousands and participated in a conference on depression. He also joined with spiritual leaders from the world's major religions — including Rajmohan Gandhi, a grandson of India's Mohandas Gandhi — to discuss peaceful resolution of military conflicts.
As Presidential Distinguished Professor, the Dalai Lama will provide private teaching sessions with students and faculty during Emory's study-abroad program in Dharamsala, India, and periodiically visit Emory in Atlanta.
The Dalai Lama fled the Himalayan region in 1959 during a failed uprising against Chinese rule. He remains highly popular among Tibetans and is lauded in much of the world as a figure of moral authority, but China reviles him as a Tibetan separatist.
Chinese officials lashed out angrily at the United States after he received Congress' highest civilian honor last week. The Dalai Lama brushed aside the furious reaction, saying he supports "genuine autonomy," not independence for Tibet.

Unusual Festivals for July

* July 22: Beer Can Regata
RegattaFor the past 31 years, the Combined Lions Clubs of Darwin have been promoting the annual Beer Can Regatta on Darwin's famous Mindil Beach.

Begun as an unusual by-product of the devastation caused to the Australian city by “Cyclone Tracy” in 1974, the Regatta resulted from locals having (a) too many beer cans; (b) too much free time; and (c) no recycling program. Said one drunk Aussie to another: "Why not stage a beer can race?" And so it went.

Amazingly, when built correctly, loads of beer cans strung together actually stay afloat. Apparently, the key is to *empty* the beer cans before affixing them together. Bored by boats? Then maybe you'll be interested in the thong-throwing contest. Hard to say, but I think those are empty, too.

* July 22-23: Stilt Dancing
Stilt dancingAnguiano, Spain, is home to a small community of stilt dancers who twirl and twist throughout the city's streets. In honor of the city's patron saint, Mary Magdalene, the stilt dancers are composed of the town's men and boys who dress in brightly-colored shirts and petticoats that trail to their ankles while exposing the 3-foot wooden stilts below them.

The dancing begins at the city's central church, where the human tops dance down the front steps of the church and along the steep, cobbled streets into the town square. The dancers move in a tight, spinning motion that requires dexterity and bravery, and no, they would NOT think it was funny if you unleashed a big bag full of marbles.

* July 29: Fiesta of Near Death Experiences
coffinThis unusual festival is for people who have come close to death but lived to talk about it. Bizarrely, they attend church in a coffin, borne aloft by members of their family. (Sadly, if you have no friends or family, you have to carry your own coffin into the church.)

Held in Las Nieves, a small town in Galicia near the border with Portugal, thousands of people fill the narrow streets on the day of Santa Maria to hear the sad and sometimes disturbing stories of the survivors. After the somber event, though, things start to turn fun, as fireworks and street food compete for the attention of participants.

Got the inside track on an unusual festival? Let us know about it!

About the Abby: Set in 36 acres of parkland at the heart of Glastonbury, the Abbey is steeped in 2000 years of history and legend. Now it is being vividly brought to life with the help of actors who play the parts of monks and a kitchen maid. The performance takes place in the Abbot's Kitchen, creating an authentic medieval environment.
The actors tell tales from the time of the Abbey about how the monks lived, the church services they attended and the food and drink available to them. It was at the Abbey in 1191 that the monks (sought and) found the remains of King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere, and their bones were reburied in 1278 inside the Abbey church. They remained there until the Abbey was vandalised after the dissolution, and no-one has seen or heard of them since.
As legend has it, the first Christian sanctuary in Britain it was visited by Joseph of Arimathea, Saint David and Saint Patrick.
Many believe that the Holy Thorn tree that can be seen in the grounds originated from Joseph of Arimathea’s staff, and others are convinced that King Arthur really was buried there.
Whatever one believes, the facts are that the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey are magnificent and the grounds are a haven provide a spot of peace and tranquillity .

Someone had lots of pictures in 2001 Web.Org.UK - Summer Solstice 2001 at Stonehenge

Arrived on site (51° 10.689' N, 1° 49.514' W) at 03:30 BST June 21st. Sunrise at 04:55 BST. Left at 06:00 BST. Weather - clear, warm night with some light cloud at dawn. Mars visible, setting, at perigee. Venus visible, rising. Today is New Moon, with a total solar eclipse visible across Africa. Atmosphere - excellent, no trouble. More people than last year (possibly 10000) including drummers, pipers, fire eaters and jugglers.

To Summer
O thou who passest thro' our valleys in
Thy strength, curb thy fierce steeds, allay the heat
That flames from their large nostrils! thou, O Summer,
Oft pitched'st here thy goldent tent, and oft
Beneath our oaks hast slept, while we beheld
With joy thy ruddy limbs and flourishing hair.
Beneath our thickest shades we oft have heard
Thy voice, when noon upon his fervid car
Rode o'er the deep of heaven; beside our springs
Sit down, and in our mossy valleys, on
Some bank beside a river clear, throw thy
Silk draperies off, and rush into the stream:
Our valleys love the Summer in his pride.
Our bards are fam'd who strike the silver wire:
Our youth are bolder than the southern swains:
Our maidens fairer in the sprightly dance:
We lack not songs, nor instruments of joy,
Nor echoes sweet, nor waters clear as heaven,
Nor laurel wreaths against the sultry heat.

A Gia Festival in NY this year, and 2008 in Salvador da Bahia, the City of Women in 2008.
This year Kris will birth the Gaia Festival West Coast and is planning a sacred pilgrimage to Salvador da Bahia, the City of Women in 2008. www.gaiafestival.com/about.html
About the Gaia Festival Creatrixes Stephanie Hamberger (East Coast Creatrix)
Stephanie is the organizer of the first annual Gaia Festival. She worked as a photojournalist for years, which eventually led her onto her present path as the co-founder of Soul Pilgrim (www.soul-pilgrim.com) - an adventure that brings sacred travel, workshops, retreats and events to folks who want to honor and heal the land.
Of both Mohawk and a mélange of European descent, she identifies with both the traditional Native American and Old European expressions of spirit, but mostly hears and honors the wordless ancient call and “does what the land tells her to do”. She makes her home in the woods and hills of Colden, NY with her husband, two cats and two rabbits and is excited to be a small part of something much bigger than all of us.
Stephanie has shared the songs, art and movement of our ancestors with travelers during her sacred pilgrimages to Glastonbury, Cornwall and Bath, England 2001-2005 for Lammas celebrations.
Later this year, Stephanie will debut the Enchanted Mountain Goddess Conference to be held August 31-September 3, 2007 in Allegany State Park, Town of Red House, New York.
Stephanie is currently authoring a book about the sacred traditions of bread baking all over the world.
